It all began in the fall of 1849, when James A. Folger at the age of 15 could not afford to travel with his older brothers to go to the mining towns. In 1850 William H. Bovee hired James to build a mill in San Francisco called The Pioneer Steam coffee and Spice Mills. When James had worked at the mill for a year he had enough money to stake his claim and go on his search for gold. Well he went with samples of the coffee and spices from the mill and he took orders along the way. James returned in 1865 and became a full partner of the mill and eventually bought out the other partners renaming the company J.A. Folger & Co. James died in 1889 and his oldest son James A. Folger II stepped up as president at the age of 26. Once he took over the focus of the company turned to the bulk production of roasted coffee. In 1963 Procter & Gamble purchased the Folgers Coffee Company and began the distribution under the name Folgers. This is when it became the number one coffee brand. Then in 2008 the J.M. Smucker Company completed their merger with Folgers.
